Here is the issue!

Last weekend, I wanted to honk at someone, horn didnt work... and i noticed that the e-brake light would flash when i pressed the horn.

i scan with vcds, no faults.

So, i start to trouble shoot..  fuse 5 blown... i replace it test the rest of the interior - everything works except the blower recycle button (by the a/c)

I then notice fuse 5 blown again..

I check grounds, everything seems okay. so I check relays (no clicking when i push the horn) theyre both good (swapped from my other car)

then i change the clock spring from a spare i had and put it back together.

I press the horn a couple time, and nothing at all - then i get a puff of smoke from behind the steering wheel.

i take it apart again and find the ribbon inside has melted in the center.

I take it apart and replace the original.

today I go out and i notice that while im driving and turning, the e-brake light flashes at me now and again.  so I move to a side road and start driving slowly and turning almost full lock and sure enough the light flashes as i turn.  Then, it stays on, and the e-brake alarm starts going off non-stop until the I get home.

So I pull it all apart again and find that the clock spring has melted.  I start to check for shorted or melted wires, and cant find a thing.

I run another scan and get this:

Address 15: Airbags        Labels: 6Q0-909-605-VW5.lbl
   Part No: 1C0 909 605 F
   Component: 04 AIRBAG VW61 0202 0001
   Coding: 12340
   Shop #: WSC 00066
   VCID: 270B0677E6FBF5FFAB3-5160

3 Faults Found:
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
            32-10 - Resistance Too High - Intermittent
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
            33-10 - Resistance Too Low - Intermittent
00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
            29-10 - Short to Ground - Intermittent

**i assume this is due to the broken clock spring**

so i give up, have a beer and call it a day, while i consider my options.  :-/
