Solo II Car Classification Question
« on: Feb 23, 15, 14:18 »
Hey everyone,

Participated in my first Auto-X event over the weekend. The local club had some issues with classing my car. 2001 Jetta VR6 (12v). Some people, myself included, thought I would be placed in STF, considering the SCCA Rulebook lists the mk5 Golf/Jetta 2.5 under STF (12v VR6s and 2.5L make essentially the same power in stock form). Appendix A in the rulebook says nothing about mk4 12v cars.

 Upon reviewing the results, however, it seems I was placed into STC instead. There's a huge difference in PAX numbers between these two classes - STF is 0.801 and STC is 0.824. Which one is it?

If it was your first event, I wouldn't worry at all about PAX....unless you plan on doing a full season and earning a rookie title.

Assuming you've declared all your mods to be eligible for Street Touring....

First off, the host club is mistaken.  There is no STC classification according the the 2015 SCCA Solo2 rules.

Secondly, the VR6 cars are not specifically listed so they fall into the "catch all" clause for STS

"Sedans & Coupes NOC (non-sportscar-based;
4-seat minimum; up to
3.1L normally-aspirated)"

STF has no "catch all" clause so only those car specifically listed are included in the class.

2015 Rules are here:  http://www.scca.com/solo/content.cfm?cid=44517

Thanks a lot for this info... I just realized I have been looking at last year's rulebook this whole time.

I contacted the divisional steward of the SCCA Northwest region and he said that in order to avoid falling into the catch all clause in STU I must write to the Solo Events Board requesting the mk4 12v to be classed within STF.

As you said, PAX isn't a huge deal right now, but as I move forward I want to make sure I'm in the right class. Didn't do too bad in STF... 2nd of 4 drivers. And 49 of 90 in indexed times. Going to ditch these super soft Eibach Pro-Kit springs for H&R race.  :thumbup:

Don't forget to sign up for autocross school - VCMC hosting another session of our Velocity program on April 11.
