EVAP leak help Please :(
« on: Dec 13, 19, 10:29 »
Car is a 2007 GTI 2.0T 166,000k

I'm fighting with an EVAP leak and I've gone through all the checks and areas I can think of and I need some help. I an a mechanic so please feel free to talk technical with me.

ISSUE= 3 faults are happening regularly after i clear codes each time.
1) Gas cap light come on, on dash
2) Gas cap light goes off after a day and Check Engine Light comes on with "Small EVAP leak" Code after Two 20K drives
3) Check Engine light stays on with "Large EVAP leak" Code as well as "Small EVAP leak code"

TESTS I'VE DONE= Resistance check on Evap Canister Purge valve in fender by filler neck. Resistance check on N80 Valve. Smoke tested entire car from intake side and from gas tank side. Checked valve cover and Vacuum hoses for leaks. Replaced Gas cap with OEM from VW

Symptoms =  Car drives fine, no hesitations or rough idle. Use 92 Octane fuel and maintain car.

I plan on replacing the valve cover gasket over Christmas break, so there's a small chance that will fix the problem but I'm not optimistic. Any advice on where to check or tests I can do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks friends  :hi:

I have the same exact issue with my 2008 R32. I have replaced the charcoal canister and many other things as well.  I read about a valve in gas tank that becomes faulty sometimes.  The other issue could be the gas tank filler neck.

uhg, i was going to replace the charcoal canister but it's 300$ + so i was being cheap. My light now only comes on from time to time so it's seems to have gotten "Better" ? dunno, might drop the tank one day and just replaced all the seals and valves. I'll post if i fix it...

The charcoal canister should be a lot cheaper than that.  My R32 one was less than $300 and is a lot bigger and under the rear sub-frame.  The GTI ones are in the engine bay and super easy to change.  My light is on and off all the time, sometimes on for a couple weeks then disappears.  I will probably have to replace the valves and seals or the filler neck.
