The guibo has 3 bolts on each side but we cant get them out. Theres not ebough clearence between the guibo and the transfer case

I've never had an issue with sticking a wrench up between the subframe and removing the bolts.

Youve done this on a syncro? Ill try again tomorrow. Any more tips? We're  accessing it from the bay should we be doing it from beneath? Does the exhaust need to come out

Youve done this on a syncro?

Yes, 3 times.

If you go under the car, you can just get a wrench in between the subframe and angle drive to remove the guibo bolts. You'll then have to pry the driveshaft rearwards as there is a centering hub that usually get corroded into the angle drive.

I find it makes it so much easier to remove the trans. Remove the 4 bolts and support bracket. You're gonna lose fluid so get a pan ready.

unbolt transfer case from tranny and prop shaft, then move it towards the passenger side (up and out of the way). Then drop the tranny like any other VW tranny. Also if the brace is on the tranny by the shift tower, remove that too.
