cis turbo build (pic intensive)
« on: Sep 29, 10, 15:53 »
Hey everyone,
Heres some pics and information regarding my never ending CIS turbo build.

I'm doing an old school turbo setup utilizing the mechanical fuel injection using parts from other european CIS turbo cars.
I took a high compression engine (PF) 10:1 CR from a '92 Golf GTI and lowered the compression to a more acceptible 8.6:1 CR.
Heres a list of work done to the engine:

-head hot tank and sonofluxed for cracks
-resurfaced just enough to clean it up (to keep compression as low as possible)
-machined to accept 2mm oversized valves, valvetrain installed and height adjusted
-ported exhaust and intake
-injector seats originally for digifant injectors machined to accept CIS fuel injector cups

-block hot tank and sonofluxed
-cylinders bored and honed
-block surfaced just enough to clean up
-rods resized
-engine balanced and crankshaft polished
-frost and oil plugs replaced

Heres a list of parts that I'm using:

-Wiseco 9:1 cr forged aluminum pistons
-custom made cometic head gasket (.098" multilayer metal gasket)
-ARP head studs and rod bolts
-supertech 2mm oversize dished and nitride coated valves w/ 7mm valves stems
-supertech dual valve springs w/ titanium retainers
-autotech 268/260 cam shaft
-adjustable cam gear
-new rod/crank/aux shaft bearings
-Spec stage 2.5 clutch kit
-weber redline TB port matched adapter to manifold
-Mallory hyfire 6 CD ignition also w/ 3 bar map sensor to control timing retard  under boost
-set of new fuel injectors

turbo components:
-volvo 850 turbocharger - td04hl 15g
-audi 5000 turbo WUR
-Volvo 240 turbo fuel distributor
-DSM sidemount intercooler
-blitz dd BOV
-diesel turbo oilpan  w/ 1 ft silicone heater hose for oil return

And.. Pics:

more updates to come, thanks for looking.

I think you may want to move your oil feed line down to the oil filter housing. Moar oil pressure there.

Thanks for the recommendation, I've got a spare braided line that should reach that far, the existing line is just a bit too short to reach the oil filter housing.

I'm not sure on est. hp, the volvo 240 turbo fuel distributor is good up to 220whp, I'm hoping to see around 170-200 whp with this particular turbo setup, it'll depend on how much boost I can run before it starts to lean out. Eventually I would like to upgrade to a slightly better turbo like the 16g but the 15g is pretty decent especially for daily driving.

Thanks for the comments,

Very cool, I have been waiting for a CIS build like this.

I cant wait to hear the results.
I converted my mk1 to run on PBR and whiskey. There are 5 oil pans hanging in my garage to show you that I win at low, I actually tattooed that on myself somewhere.

This is rad. Iam peicing together a similar set up right now. When you get it running I would love to come check it out.
There is a thread on the vortex some dude in australia did a cis turbo in his rabbit and is running 13 sec 1/4miles with the stock GX code motor . He isnt even using the volvo dizzy and has plenty of fuel to 14 psi. search username "John Milner" and have a read its a good build. I imagine you will have a quick little jetta

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

Hey Jesse I've been following that thread on the vortex for a while now, its very informative and he surely got some very nice results with his setup!
Its great that theres so much information and interest in turbo charging using the CIS injection it really does have great potential.
I'd definitely like to see progress on your project when it gets on its way! its cool to see another dubber near by thats doing something simular

16v injector clips work with a little bit of modding.  Make sure the injector cups have the groove for them though.

yeah the  rubber o-rings that fit on the injector sit inside a groove in the brass injector cups, i'm using the 2 piece injector cups with the brass cup and plastic shroud. Being a digifant head there will be no air shrouding for the injectors but im not concerned.

I think the injectors will be fine, the fitment of the injector in the o-ring is a quite a tight fit and i've never ran into this problem in the past and i dont recall this being a problem with other people running boosted cis engines, not too worried :)
