Need help: b5 1.8t overboosting
« on: Feb 17, 15, 12:25 »

-update. car is overboosting.
flashed with stage 1 14psi.
hits about 20psi on full throttle

I just bought my first a4, it's a 2000 1.8t...
anyways im fairly sure the previous owner flashed the ECU with some kind of software but I don't know what it is.
When plugged into VSDS it says something about POWERPROM. It also runs aound 20psi of boost.
Is there a way to find out what the actual software is?
Is there a simple way to return to stock?
It looks to me like the ecu is running something like a stage 2, however the car hasnt' really been built for it.
Any help or input is appreciated, I'm not new to cars in the slightest but this is my first time owning an audi or a 1.8t engine.

What you mean the car isn't build for the tune?

The guy I bought it off said it was essentially  just stock except for the chip.
It wouldn't run  properly until a manual boost controller was set up to keep it down below  15psi.
From what I've read a stage 2 needs things upgraded like exhaust/intake/intercooler...is this true?

intercooler - doubtful.
Exhaust - maybe
intakes just make noise.

(from what I've been told) It was running too much boost..up to about 21psi. The car would end up in limp mode or something.

Car goes into limp mode if it sees boost it's not expecting. If its tuned in theory it would be expecting it.

So I just figured out that its a stage 1 AMS powerprom set up for  14psi as per the label that I found.
Would it be safe to assume there is probably a boost leak of some kind if it runs upwards of 20psi?
I haven't gotten a good chance to test it out without the manual boost controller myself since I havent' had the car long, and it's been off the road.

Shmiesus, I appreciate the input and help :admire:

so it's aiming for 14psi and you're getting 20?

It has a manual boost controller?

usually even my car is controlled by the N75 valve which is controlled by the ecu and adjusted by the tune

Double check all vac lines.  Make sure they're all connected, even the wee little one under the n249? (the hockey puck on the TIP).  does it stumble at 20 psi?  or just go into limp mode.

Sorry it's been a while but here's an update.

Got a chance yesterday to remove the manual boost controller that had been installed by the PO.
Also put in a different n75 and replaced the lines coming off it.
The car runs and drives smooth but when you give it some serious throttle it boosts consistenly up to 19-20 psi.
It didn't seem to go into limp mode but I only drove it for a bit around the city.

The label on the ECU does say 14psi so I feel like I have a problem somewhere.
The guy I bought it off said it was doing this same thing and that's why he put in the manual boost controller.

Should I try to test my wastegate somehow?
Also is it dangerous at all to be running 20psi?
